4.6 Ethernet cards IF-E1 and IF-E2
The Ethernet or network card connects the device directly
to a host PC or via Ethernet hubs/switches. According to
the connection type, a patch cable or crossover cable has
to be used. The Ethernet interface with its RJ45 socket can
not be configured, thus it works in automatic mode, which
will detect the connection speed of 10 or 100 MBit. Which
is then finally used will be defined by the host PC‘s setttings
or the network hardware.
Note: the connection speed of Ethernet (10Mbit or 100MBit)
is not equivalent to the communication speed when commu-
nicating with the device itself. This speed is internally set to
100kBit and thus results in certain response and execution
times. Also see section 4.5.6
4.6.1 Reset default parameters
The card only required three basic parameters, which are
defined to these default settings when delivered:
IP:
Subnet mask:
Gateway:
If these parameters are changed, they‘re stored inside the
device, not on the card. The card will read them out after
every start and use them as long as the device is powered
or until the parameters are changed.
In case the user has forgot the IP, the device becomes inac-
cessible for the first moment. At the device series PSI 8000
and PSI 9000 the parameters can also be set and read out
in the graphical setup menu of the device. Alternatively, the
three basic parameters can be reset to default by the little
reset button on the card, while it is running. The default
values are instantly set and stored inside the device.
4.6.2 Configuring the Ethernet card
Plug the card into the dedicated slot while the device is swit-
ched off, and switch the device on again. The connection
parameters can be configured in the setup menu, depending
on the device series:
Here you set the desired device node and you also get an
overview which cards are currently installed. By selecting
a card with
you enter the configuration menu for that particular card.
Each card has to be configured individually.

You can now setup the parameters:

The selection is done with the arrow buttons on the control
panel, the adjustment is done with the left rotary encoder.
At the series PSI 8000, the rotary encoder is also a push-
button, which can be used to switch between coarse and
fine adjustment steps.
At device series which do not allow to configure IP etc. on
the device, we supply a small tool which can setup the para-
meters via the USB interface. After settings the parameters,
the Ethernet connection can be used by IP.
Attention! General provisions and regulations regarding
network topology and setup do apply here. Wrong settings
will lead to network problems and inaccessible device.
4.6.3 Communicating with the device
General
The communication with the device is done via several ports,
which are particularly required to be configured for a router
or firewall. These are:
HTTP:
VXI11:
I. Via HTTP
The network card features a HTTP server. When accessing
the IP of the device by a web browser, a graphical user in-
terface appears which will give information about the device,
such as device type, nominal values, actual values and set
values.
This web site can be used to remotely control the device.
With the appropriate configuration even via the internet.
We do not recommend to control the device via the internet,
because everyone would have access to the device who
knows its IP or finds out and could do harm by changing
set values.
Remote control is done with SCPI commands which are
transferred using the VXI11 protocol. The required ports are
told above and the command set is identical to the one in
section 4.5.8. In order to avoid multiple users accessing the
device at once, one user can lock the device access to his
IP by using the Lock button on the web site. The access is
either unlocked by the Unlock button or automatically after
10 minutes of idling. This also applies if the browser is closed
without unlocking the access before.
A different user would then have access to the device only
10 minutes after the last action of the previous user.
