For the awake process two signals are defined ’U1W’ and ’U2W’. Depending on the call
direction (up-, downstream) U1W and U2W are interpreted as awake or acknowledge
signals (see figures below).

U4H requires the NT to go to the ’Transparent’ state. On detecting U4H the
NT stops sending signal U3 and informs the S-transceiver or a layer-2
device via the IOM
The M-channel on U may be used to transfer loop commands.
U4 transports operational data on B and D channels. The M-channel on U
may be used to transfer loop commands.
U5 transports operational data on B and D channels. The M-channel on U
may be used to transfer code error indications.
The DFE-T V2.2 sends periodically single pulses once per millisecond on
the U-interface. The test mode can be used for pulse mask
measurements.
